Cleaning Products for Your Contacts

Your contacts will need to be cleaned regularly, no matter what type they are.

Your contacts will need to be cleaned regularly, no matter what type they are. Usually, your contacts should be cleaned at night or whenever you have to take them out of your eyes. The following are several types of cleaning products you can use for your lenses.

1. Saline Saline is commonly used for storing and rinsing your lenses. Whenever you remove your contacts to store them for the night, saline solution is used to soak them in. Keep in mind though that saline is not a product intended for cleaning and disinfecting your lenses, so never use them for that purpose.

2. Daily cleaner solution Cleaning your contacts is done with a daily cleaner. A few drops of the cleaner is placed in the palm of your hand, and the lens should then be rubbed gently in the solution. This is done for both sides of the lens for about 30 seconds each. This solution is only used for cleaning, and not for rinsing or disinfecting.

3. Multipurpose solution Probably the best type of solution available for your contacts, as the multipurpose solution does everything--it cleans, disinfects, and rinses your lenses. You can even use it for soaking your lenses at night. A multipurpose solution is convenient to use, because you just use one solution for cleaning and rinsing, then your lenses are ready to be worn--you dont need to use any other products.

4. Hydrogen peroxide Hydrogen peroxide can clean, disinfect, rinse, and store your contacts. It's a no rub solution, eliminating the need for rubbing the lenses in the solution during cleaning--just soak them in a few minutes and they're done. Although hydrogen peroxide contains chemicals that wont burn your eyes, it's always safe to use a specific rinsing solution on the lenses before you put them in your eyes.

5. Cleaning and disinfecting These dual-purpose products will both clean and disinfect your contacts. Cleaning is done by using either agitation or ultrasonic waves, while the disinfecting process is achieved by a multipurpose solution or UV light. To avoid damage to your eyes or contacts, always follow the instructions on the label of the product you selected.

6. Enzymatic cleaners Ideal for removing protein buildup on your contacts, these types of cleaners usually come in the form of tablets. You can use them with either disinfecting or saline solution to clean out the protein from the lenses, and is usually done on a weekly basis.

7. Protein removers These products are the best for removing the protein from your contact lenses on a daily basis. They come in liquid form, and using them can't be easier--just add a drop or two of the remover to your normal soaking solution. Protein removers also effective when used with multipurpose solution, as they will get rid of all the protein buildup on your lenses.

8. Eye drops Eye drops are quite common with users of contact lenses. Eye drops mostly lubricate your eyes and re-wet your contact lenses, giving you relief from dryness. To avoid any problems with them, choose your eye drops carefully, and select a brand that will be safe to use.

While other products that you can use with your contacts are also available, the ones listed above are the most commonly known as well as the most popular choices. They're all affordable and easy to find in your local department store. If you wear contact lenses, it's important to know that you should never be without your lens cleaning products.
