Cleaning Hard Contact Lenses

The proper care and cleaning of hard contact lenses can be somewhat different from the method done for soft contact lenses.

The proper care and cleaning of hard contact lenses can be somewhat different from the method done for soft contact lenses. This is mainly due to the material that hard contacts are comprised of, which is known as PMMA (polymethylmethacrylate), a very rigid material that doesnt contain as much water like soft contacts.

Since the cleaning process for hard contacts is different, you should at least know how to properly clean them before you actually make a purchase. A cleaning solution is a must for hard contacts, and should be purchased along with the lenses.

About the only other thing that hard and soft contact lenses have in common during the cleaning process is that you must wash your hands before you handle them. Always wash your hands with soap and water before handling the lenses; it's recommended that you use antibacterial soap, since it not only thoroughly clean your hands, it doesnt contain any type of fragrance as well.

To clean your hard contacts, the first thing you do is to take the lens out of your eye and place it in the palm of your hand. Using your cleaner, squirt a couple of cleaning drops into the center of the lens and gently work the solution into the lens. Do this for about one minute; don't use pressure because you might tear up the lens.

When you are done cleaning your hard contacts, youll have to rinse them. Since these strurdy lenses dont really require any special solution for rinsing, you can just rinse them off with lukewarm water. After rinsing, put the hard contacts back in the case and soak them in the usual solution that you use for your hard lenses. The solution will keep your hard contacts fresh, and also remove any protein buildup.

Hard contact lenses tend to last longer than soft lenses, and they don't need to be replaced for months. Provided you know the cleaning process, hard contacts are quite easy to clean, and you can choose among the many brands of soaking and cleaning solutions available at your local department store. As long as you properly take care of your contacts and soak them in solution at night like you're supposed to, your hard contact lenses can last a long time without giving your vision any problems.
