While we all know that contact lenses are a very popular alternative to corrective vision, if you dont take care of them, they might end up doing more harm than good. To ensure that you always get the most from your contacts lenses and keep them feeling comfortable while you wear them, try following the tips enumerated below.

Tip #1 Always replace your lenses as required by the type or brand of contacts you use. If you use daily disposable lenses, discard them at night before you go to sleep, then use a fresh pair when you wake up the next day. Most types of contacts will need to be replaced with a new pair every 2 weeks.

Tip #2 Never share or swap your contact lenses with other people, not even if you know them well, whether they're a family member or a close friend. Swapping them with others could either damage the lens or damage your eyes, if you take into account factors involved like lens shape, grade, or even protein buildup. Always remember that your contacts are made specifically for your exclusive use.

Tip #3 If your contacts are starting to cause irritation in your eyes, give your eyes ample time to rest by removing your lenses. This usually takes care of the problem, but if it turns out to be more than just irritation or tired eyes, don't resume wearing your contacts until you schedule a visit with your optician to have your eyes and lenses examined.

Tip #4 Handle your contacts carefully--always wash your hands with soap and water, then dry your hands thoroughly before touching your lenses. Dirty hands can place dirt or debris on the contacts or might even cause tears or scratches, which in turn are transferred to your eyes when you wear them. This could result in all kinds of damage to your eyes, ranging from an eye infection to scratching your cornea.

Tip #5 When it comes to using solutions, avoid letting the tip of the bottle touch any surface to prevent contamination. Some solutions are specifically made for use with certain types of contacts, so make sure you use the right kind. And while you can use some solutions as eye drops, there are solutions that aren't meant to be used in your eyes. It's always a good thing to read the solution labels carefully to be on the safe side.

Tip #6 Try to make a habit of placing your contacts in your eyes using the exact same order every time. This way, you won't mix them up, because you'll remember which contact goes in first. And always inspect your contact lenses thoroughly before you put them in to make sure they're not dirty or damaged; if you notice anything amiss, discard them immediately and use a new pair instead.

Tip #7 While contacts are great to use, youll need to rest your eyes often. Once you start experiencing problems with your contacts, take them out and let your eyes rest for a while. You can then resume wearing your contacts after a few hours, when your eyes get the rest and oxygen they require.

Hopefully, you've learned that getting the most from your contacts not only involves proper care and maintenance, but perhaps a bit of common sense as well.
